What’s the difference between life coaching and psychotherapy?

Does psychotherapy occur as a big scary word does it seem like anyone can call themselves a life coach? Let me clarify what these are. Psychotherapy is a term that confirms that anyone who uses that word out there in the world science based evidence based research based tools to help you. Has gotten licensed 3k hours, trained in trauma, billed to insurance and as long as they are goal oriented and solution focused they can be a life coach. Unfortunately there is no governing body for life coaching as a result of that a life coach could range anyone who went through a rigorous and reputable coaching program to someone who has never stepped foot in a training program their whole life. This leaves somebody who is seeking help a lot of uncertainty as to whether or not they will get the help they are looking for and at the right price. Whereas with a licensed psychotherapist there are standards, governing bodies and recursive action. While any psychotherapist can function as a life coach and life coaches cannot practice psychotherapy, there is still an art to life coaching that when married with the science of psychotherapy has made me effective at rapidly identifying my clients challenges and providing actionable transformative solutions.

Life coaching does not target any mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, or intimacy challenges with couples. Add that with coaching you can work on helping them find purpose, overcome fears, stop negative thinking patterns, and work towards actionable goals.
